Key feature
Project ‘Sampurna’ (a Marathi word meaning ‘wholesome’) is a collaborative venture between the Solapur Municipal Corporation and HMF for improving Maternal and Newborn Health. It is implemented in the communities covered by five Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) that cater to a vulnerable population residing in underserved communities.
Project ‘Sampurna’ – Methodology
The project was designed primarily to supplement and complement the services that the Urban Primary Health Care Centres provided to pregnant women through community-based ANMs and ASHAs.
Objectives
The project aims to fill the gaps in the current MNH services of the UPHC to improve the quality of MNH services.
The objectives of the project include:
– To bring about behaviour change communication for effective utilization of MNH services through awareness creation,
– Develop desirable positive behaviours among providers and those seeking health care,
– Provide facilities for screening at-risk mothers, check-ups and anomaly scanning.
– Provide kits to ANM and ASHA workers for antenatal care consisting of weighing machines, blood pressure machines, glucometers with strips, etc.
Raising the quality of health care; complementing State MNH services through meaningful partnership.

Achievements (Case stories)
LIVES OF THE MOTHER AND THE BABY SAVED
Sharadabai (name changed), who was pregnant, initially tested at 7.3 gm % for Haemoglobin and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Following counselling, she diligently adhered to the prescribed regimen of daily Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) tablets. Consequently, her Haemoglobin levels increased to 9.3 gm%. However, she delivered a low-birth-weight baby weighing only 1.5 kg. Sharadabai was promptly advised on early and exclusive breastfeeding. Subsequent follow-up revealed that with appropriate care, the baby not only survived but also made significant progress
DANGEROUS PREGNANCIES TERMINATED
Sarika (name changed) was married to a blood relative and was pregnant. Given the increased risk of anomalies due to consanguinity, she was recommended to undergo an anomaly scan. The scan unveiled a severe heart defect deemed incompatible with life. Seeking a second opinion confirmed the grim prognosis, indicating minimal chances of the baby surviving post-delivery. Consequently, the case was referred to the civil hospital, and the pregnancy was terminated.
