The belief that gender equality can be achieved by involving men alongside women led HMF to make concerted efforts in this direction. Starting with a three-year experimental project in 2010 in a challenging location with no prior HMF influence, the initiative was extended to its regular project areas in 2019. The approach was based on the premise that developing leadership of gender-equal men living in the villages would create role models who challenge and change, both, patriarchal male stereotypes as well as social norms that breed gender inequality, thereby influencing attitudinal and behavioral changes in the village communities. The endeavour was extremely challenging, but the impact was encouraging.
